The Name
Behind the Business

Silk & Sassafras Southern Style comes from my sweet Yorkie, Silk & Sassafras Spivey.. I got her during one of the darkest times of my life.

At 38 I had a heart attack. My cardiologist told me for nine months to tell my 16 year old twin boys good-bye. He said there was nothing he could do to help me.

With an ejection fraction of 5-10 % (barely able to walk or do anything for myself)  I decided to find a cardiologist who could help me.

I found Dr. Sharma and his team. He was the cardiologist I needed. He fought for me and was determined to make my life survivable. After 1 week from my first visit I was checked into the hospital and had a Biventricular Pacemaker/Defibrillator surgically implanted and wired into my heart.

We got Sassy six months after my heart attack. She was one pound one ounce. She fit inside Frankie's shirt pocket when we brought her home. At her heaviest she weighed five pounds,

We didn't know that when we bought her she only had two weeks left to either be sold or she would have been put in a cage and bred to death..

We bought her from a dealer in Jefferson. Two weeks after we got Sassy, the woman's home was raided. It was one of the worst puppy mills in Jackson County history.

There were so many atrocities they can't be listed here. Suffice to say it was horrible. There were seventy five deceased dogs, including puppies thrown away like trash in the back corner of her property..

There were dogs and puppies that had to be put down because of the condition of their feet from being in a cage all their lives. It's much worse than I can describe.

Sassy became a major part of my life. She was my heart, my special friend from Jesus. We like to say we rescued her but she rescued me. She, along with Jesus, helped bring me out of my severe depression and made me see life differently.

My life was made so much richer for having her in my life. She was a part of our family for fifteen years.

We have a new Yorkie now. She is five years old and weighs just over eight pounds. Her name is Sissy Isabella Spivey. She will never replace Sassy, no one or nothing can, but she is a sweet companion who keeps my days filled with warmth and laughter.

Silk & Sassafras Southern Style is a tribute to a very special Yorkshire Terrier who changed my family's life for the good.
